No Summer Lunch Program
Dear Community Friends and Families,
As you may be aware, the Granite Falls School District has been able to provide a free lunch service for children during the summer months for the past three years. This service was a program that was federally funded and the district successfully applied for this service each year. Our district was able provide the site, staff and resources, and of course, lunch for the children due to the funding we received. We served children up to the age of 18, Monday through Friday, beginning in June and ending in August with an average of 55 students per day.
Due to the recent changes in demographics from the recent U.S. census data, our District no longer qualifies to receive the funds required to run this program. The District will no longer be able to run the Summer Lunch Program because the funding is no longer available. It is very difficult to hear that we are not eligible anymore, yet we strongly recognize the need for a service like this in our community.
Our Granite Falls School Board Community Liaison Representative, Carl Cary, will be reaching out to city officials, business owners, and other concerned citizens in the hopes that an external organization will consider a similar service for the children of our community. I have also arranged to communicate this need with the Chamber of Commerce and Community Coalition at our upcoming meetings.
If anything should develop or if more information becomes available, we will communicate this as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 360.691.7717.
